Birth of a Nation, Stan Douglas’ most recent work, revisits D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film The Birth of a Nation.
Douglas’ work utilises footage of the original film, which includes images of white actors in blackface. In both Griffith’s images and Douglas’ restagings of the silent film, images of the Ku Klux Klan and a lynching appear towards the end of the film. A depiction of suicide appears about halfway through the film.
