On view 17 December 2024–15 March 2025 Lightscape is a multimedia artwork created by artist Doug Aitken in collaboration with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Philharmonic – a shapeshifting act of contemporary storytelling that unfolds in various stages.
Following the premiere of the live-to-picture concert experience at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Lightscape takes shape as a large-scale multi-screen art installation in Marciano Art Foundation’s Theater Gallery and will be activated weekly with musical performances organized by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Doug Aitken Workshop. The project will culminate in the release of a feature-length film.
‘At the core of Lightscape was an attempt to create a different kind of structure... We really do live in a world where we’re asked to be passive and to consume. We need to flip the script, push that away, and create culture where there is atmosphere and ambiguity... We also need gray areas that allow us to have more oxygen to come into our potential as humans and push against the white noise and the absolutism that we’re surrounded by’: Read more from Doug Aitken in Interview Magazine
