'A founding member of the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council, Mutu is one of the most esteemed and essential African artists working today. Mutu's practice has been a vital fixture at the forefront of international art for many years. In her hands, women's bodies fuse with the natural forms of fish, crocodiles, snakes, shells, plants, and the sun itself. Though static, their powerful figures seem close to moving, breathing, floating, and slithering away.'
The artist was honoured at a fundraising gala on 11 February at the Cape Town museum.
