Information
In The Widow series, the computer was only used to retouch the images and van Lamsweerde has entered into a narrative world, or so it seems at first glance, since we see an eight year old girl posing in different dresses and props. Yet because of the rigid colour scheme and strong formality of the photographs, van Lamsweerde feels that the images no longer refer to the visible reality and the narrative is pushed to the background. She states that 'in these images, there is neither dream nor reality, time nor space, inside nor outside, young nor old, black nor white, man nor woman.' As in earlier work, by using a surrealist language and displaying a fascination with future technological development, the combination of unexpected associations creates another new kind of being.
