Information
For over a decade Nilsson’s art has been largely centered around his own body, be it a matter of its conspicuous absence or by exposing it to the extreme.
In The House Angel, 2001, Nilsson is depicted as a hiphop freak. Balancing on a walnut podium and dressed in an intricate tailored costume of white silk, the body of the artist is reduced to a backbone and erect penis, with no head or internal organs. Animated by a huge fan, flashing light and pulsating electronic music the ghostly form is frozen in the same grotesque posture as Max Ernst’s figure in his disturbing painting Der Haus Engel.
Nilsson is perhaps best known for his installation Gå i fängelse (Go to Jail, 1996) where the artist spent two months locked in a transparent cell. His most recent London show was a dramatic commission last year for DAKS’s new flagship store. Entitled Game is Over, this installation comprised four figures, two men with dog’s ears (one of which was a cast of Nilsson’s body) and two women with deer’s ears. Bespoke tailored in the fashion house’s signature cloth, the figures engaged in a sinister hunting game where the roles of the hunter and the prey were reversed.
