This painting is based on The Apotheosis of The Pisani Family (1761-62), a fresco in Villa Pisani, Stra which is a perfect example of the way Tiepolo creates islands of information which the eye zips between, sort of like a pinball. It echoes the feeling of walking through Venice, down densely packed alleyways, which suddenly open out into wide expanses of water. I wanted to explore that notion of pace with this work, looking at the journey the eye takes though the painting, how it might rest at a point of discernible figuration or travel through busy clusters before being flung out into the space between.

Specific to this painting: A short, light instrumental piece of music of no specified form, usually for piano.- Also means something of little importance. And it’s the name of the earliest version of pin ball- which I quite like as that’s what I think about when I look at Tiepolo’s painting, because it feels like eye ricochets between islands of information in the composition in the same way. Especially the painting I looked at for this one which was on a mixture of “the Apotheosis of the Pisani Family’ By Tiepolo in Villa Pisani, Stra and the oil on canvas modello for the Fresco.
General: I think the sense of rhythm and movement is what has really stuck with me from the Venetian paintings and from the feeling of living in Venice, with the lapping water, and the changes of pace between the dense narrow streets, opening into broad vistas as you cross the canal. So I’ve ended up titling them all names of Italian musical forms. I hope it can talk about the sense of play and pleasure in the work, which although less explicit than in the imagery of the French rococo, manifests in the Italian rococo in the way the paintings sort of dance your eye through the compositions and in the fresh light colours of the frescos.
